Frequently Asked Questions

  • Poppy Pelvic Health + Wellness specializes exclusively in pelvic health, and your health is the top priority. Our sessions are 55 minutes, one-on-one to provide the best quality care and attention. We help you to feel strong, confident, and at home in your body so you can spend less time managing symptoms and more time living fully.

  • We provide personalized, one-on-one physical therapy services focused on treating pelvic floor dysfunction and supporting women’s pelvic health across all stages of adult life.

Pelvic floor dysfunction encompasses a variety of conditions related to the pelvic muscles and surrounding structures. Common concerns we address include urinary and bowel incontinence, pelvic pain, pregnancy-related issues, pelvic organ prolapse, and postpartum concerns.

  • The first visit will be an initial evaluation.  We will start by discussing your concerns, symptoms, and personal goals. The conversation will take a deep dive into your medical history, including any pregnancies, abdominal or back surgeries, and gynecological or urinary concerns.

We will then perform a physical exam which may include an assessment of your movement (such as bending and squatting), body mechanics, mobility, and strength. We’ll review the function of your pelvic floor muscles, pelvic organs, and typical bladder and bowel habits. If it’s appropriate, an internal pelvic assessment will also be performed at this time.

The conversation and physical exam will shape our initial treatment plan. Importantly, during this initial evaluation, you will be heard. Our goal is to help you better understand your body and feel empowered as you begin your pelvic health journey.

  • Internal pelvic assessments evaluate the function of your pelvic floor muscles. Using a gloved index finger – not a speculum – we will assess muscle strength, tone, coordination and any areas of tightness or discomfort. This provides valuable insight into issues that may be contributing to symptoms like leakage, pelvic pressure, pain, or prolapse. That said, your comfort is essential. We can absolutely use external assessments and other tools to guide your care.

  • No, you do not need a referral to get started. New Jersey is a direct access state, which means you can begin physical therapy without a prescription from a physician, midwife, or other healthcare provider.

However, to continue care after 30 days or 10 visits (whichever comes first), you will need a prescription. We’re happy to guide you through that process if and when the time comes.

  • Poppy Pelvic Health + Wellness is a cash-based, out-of-network provider. Payment is due at the time of your visit (HSA and FSA can be used). This model allows us to offer personalized, high-quality care without the limitations often imposed by insurance companies.

Additionally, we will provide you with a detailed receipt, also known as a “Superbill,” which you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement to you, depending on your out-of-network benefits.
